Storytelling Project Description

Illustration of Books

The Storytelling Project seeks to amplify the stories of homeownership, community, & family of 30+ Russell residents by way of interviews conducted by KY writers and various artistic mediums produced by KY artists. Using this RFP as a guide, 4 artists and 2 writers will be selected to participate as a cohort. The application for proposals will remain open from June 13, 2022, through June 30, 2022.

Selected participants will work in partnership with an Artist Advisory Committee and Russell Home Repair residents in a 6-session series of weekly meetups beginning in July 2022 through September 2022. Weekly meetups will consist of getting grounded in the project goals; learning about Russell history; creative brainstorming and planning; and building community amongst advisory members, other artists, and Russell residents. Following the conclusion of the weekly meetups, artists will be given a stipend for supplies and materials and will have about 6-weeks to work individually and complete their artwork.

Home Repair Program

Step Governmental Agencies

Russell: A Place of Promise (RPOP) is partnering with New Directions Housing Corporation Repair Affair to provide free home repairs to 30 resident homeowners in Russell to help them remain in their homes. Homeowners who are 55+ in age or who have a disability that limits their mobility or their ability to increase their income are eligible to participate.

Selected homeowners will receive home repairs of up to $6,000 in value, end-of-life planning services through the Legal Aid Society and a local funeral provider, and an opportunity to work with artists to document their stories of living in Russell and to have their personal and family portraits made. These stories and portraits will be presented in an exhibit in late 2022 and will later be compiled into a book (available online and hardcopy) that celebrates their contributions to the Russell neighborhood.

Our Vision of building Black wealth through investment without displacement includes sharing decision-making and leadership with residents; connecting individuals and families to resources leading to homeownership and traditional and nontraditional business ownership; building pathways and opportunities to strengthen existing Black-owned businesses; creating innovative connections to career-track jobs; and community ownership of neighborhood assets.

RPOP is being incubated within Cities United and Louisville Metro Government and is a fiscally sponsored project of the Community Foundation of Louisville (CFL), a 501(c)(3) public charity. By 2024 the project will become its own entity decided Russell residents!
